A single ticket sold in New Jersey has won the $315.3 million Powerball jackpot in Saturday's drawing, lottery officials announced early Sunday.
New Jersey Lottery Acting Executive Director John M. White announced Sunday afternoon that the winning ticket was sold at Shoprite of Hackensack at 500 South River Street in Hackensack, Bergen County.
"We are thrilled that the winning Powerball jackpot ticket was sold here and I'm happy to congratulate the retailer that sold this winning ticket," said White.
Shoprite of Hackensack will receive a $30,000 bonus check from the New Jersey Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
The winning numbers drawn were 3, 6, 9, 17, and 56, with Powerball number 25. The Power Play multiplier was 3.
According to the New Jersey Lottery, the lump-sum cash payment option before taxes for Wednesday's drawing was $183 million.
"Special congratulations to the winner of this multi-million dollar Powerball jackpot," White continued. "We encourage the winner to sign the back of that winning ticket, make a copy of both sides and put it in a safe place, and contact Lottery Headquarters at 609-599-5875 to arrange to file a claim for this multi-million dollar jackpot prize."
This is the second time in three months New Jersey has a large multi-state lottery jackpot winner. In April, Lottery Post reported that Richard Wahl, a production manager at a northern New Jersey food services facility, claimed a $533 million Mega Millions lottery jackpot. The drawing for that jackpot win was on March 31.
New Jersey, with its voluminous number of lottery players, has had a healthy share of top jackpot winners over the years. Although this $315.3 million lottery win would be considered the largest win in history for most states, New Jersey winners have claimed all or part of seven other multi-state lottery jackpots bigger than this one.
In fact, New Jersey players were the sole winners of three jackpots exceeding Saturday's grand prize total, with the $533 million Mega Millions jackpot claimed in April being the largest sole jackpot win in the state.
Overall, Saturday's $315.3 million prize is the 36th-largest lottery jackpot in United States history. The $183 million cash option would be the 35th-largest lottery lump-sum cash payout in US lottery history.
The holder of Saturday's jackpot-winning ticket has 1 year after the date of the drawing in which to claim the prize, which is subject to federal and state withholding taxes.
In addition to the jackpot winner, 5 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a second-prize win of $1,000,000: 2 from Florida, 1 from Minnesota, 1 from New York, and 1 from Texas.
None of the second-prize winners purchased the Power Play multiplier for an extra $1 per play. If they had, their prize would have been automatically doubled to $2 million.
The Power Play feature is not offered in California, where state law that mandates pari-mutuel payouts that vary from draw-to-draw is not compatible with the fixed-prize nature of Power Play.
49 tickets matched four white numbers plus the Powerball and won $50,000. Of those tickets, 14 were purchased with the Power Play option, increasing the prize to $150,000, and 2 of the tickets were sold in California, where the prize was worth $36,525 this drawing.
Powerball is offered for sale in 44 states, plus the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.
A $2 ticket gives you a one in 292.2 million chance at winning the jackpot, according to multi-state lottery website USA Mega (www.usamega.com). Drawings are held at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Because there was a jackpot winner, the Powerball jackpot resets to $40 million for the next drawing on Wednesday evening.
Congrats to the lucky ticket purchaser. A special congrats to the person that purchased their ticket in Houston, TX with a QP for a nice 2nd place million dollar win.
Lmfao. I sort of knew low numbers.
Let it be Todd or one of our New Jersey Lottery Post members!
Just think if they spent that extra dollar, makes me wanna holler, Powerplay all the way!
Congrats to the winner whoever they might be. Just my observation, the East Coast of the country has been winning these Jackpots a lot lately.
I wonder how many people in that area alone buy tickets..geez
That is exactly what I have been thinking but I didnt want to say it, I would be labeled a whiner or conspiracy theorist lol.
This is the second time in three months New Jersey has a large multi-state lottery jackpot winner.
It’s always New Jersey.
better then it always being cali or fl
OH? lol, well Florida has only been winning the second tier prizes lately. I am sure that will soon change!
It's always wherever it was just won according to jj.
Tell you what jj, I'll give you a dollar for every NJ PB jackpot winner but you'll have to give me a dollar for every non-NJ winner. Deal?
That would be fate or Karma if our fearless leader Todd Northrop won it. You never know.
I hope that the PB authorities are not planning on increasing the odds even more. We have not been getting billion dollar jackpots liked they planned. So, no need to change.
All the numbers except one, #56, were birthday numbers.
Lol
I’d take that deal because I’d come out way ahead.
New Jersey probably has no non winners.
