A New York man and his 49-year-old mother have pleaded guilty in the slaying of a man who was killed over a winning scratch-off lottery ticket.

The Monroe County District Attorney's Office says 29-year-old James McCracken, of Rochester, pleaded guilty Monday to second-degree murder in the slaying of 66-year-old Robert Pinckney. McCracken's mother, Jacqueline Staples, pleaded guilty to a robbery charge.

Prosecutors say Staples was with Pinckney at his residence in September 2015 when she became aware that he had a winning scratch-off lottery ticket. She called her son, who arrived soon after and stabbed and bludgeoned Pinckney to death.

The mother and son later went to a nearby convenience store to cash the ticket. Officials declined to release the amount the winning ticket was worth.

McCracken will be sentenced March 13 to 20 years to life in prison. His mother will be sentenced the same day to eight years.

God...what low lives. Their sentences are way too light. They should be put away for the rest of their lives. So they didn't disclose the amount he won. I don't get that.

I think stores can only cash up to $599....so he died for less than $600...smh

I will bet, the trolls don't think it is bad. Just, like that slime ball in Charleston. He should have been shot, incinerated and flushed down the toilet.

The mother was charged with robbery. Why is robbery 8 years in prison? Am I missing something?

None of the stores here will cash any over $500 but I'm pretty sure you're right about it that they could up to $599 if they would because they told me at the claims office you have to bring $600 & over to them!

I hope they stay in prison for the rest of their life and sit there and think about what they have done over a few measly dollars!...how cruel they are!

I see now the mother got 8 years...that is not enough at all!!!

Maybe the amount won wasn't disclosed to protect the next of kin who might be given the prize.

Mom and son are animals.

What I don't understand Is, It was the so called MOTHER that set the entire thing in Motion, So why Isn't she accused of Murder or some type of degree of It? That makes absolutely no sense at all, NOT THAT ANY OF THIS DOES. Under $600, Dollars REALLY??

Hopefully someone In Prison will give them both what they deserve, so the Tax Payers won't have to Provide them with Free Medical, 3 Meals a day, Free Housing & Clothing for the time there In Prison! The only thing they deserve after what they did Is to be wiped off the face of the earth!

How does anyone plan the robbery and murder of an innocent person and gets to plead to only robbery and only gets 8 years. And why does this guy have a shot of ever stepping foot outside a prison cell again? With overcrowding and good behavior, it's doubtful he'll even do the 20 years. These sentences make no sense?

No one is going to get me to believe that these two bleary-eyed, non-geniuses didn't leave a trail of incriminating evidence straight back to them. I understand that dockets are full and all that, but this isn't justice. 8 and 20 years isn't justice.

When there's premeditation, when there's a conspiracy, when there's theft and when there are no mitigating factors (no self defense claim etc), 8 and 20 years isn't justice. It's not even a deterrent. Next time they'll make sure it's an amount that'll make it worth their while.
