A proposal by some Republican lawmakers to allow a statewide vote on a lottery is scheduled for discussion in a public hearing on Wednesday.

The Economic Development and Tourism Committee in the House of Representatives plans to hold the hearing at 1 p.m. in room 410 at the State House.

The bill, by Rep. Alan Harper, R-Northport, does not specify how lottery proceeds would be used if the voters approved the constitutional amendment.

The Legislature would have to decide that later.

Sen. Jim McClendon, R-Springville, is sponsoring an identical bill in the Senate.

Also on Wednesday, the Senate Education Committee is scheduled to consider a bill that would repeal use of the Common Core education standards in public schools.

The Legislature returns Tuesday for the second week of the session.

Don't know if you news tidbit resulted in this story, but anyway thanks for posting Todd!

This would force, one would think, Mississippi to consider a lottery if Alabama gets one.  I still have my doubts either state would be progressive enough to allow their citizens to spend their money as they wish.

With billion dollar jackpots in recent days, Alabama representatives are listening to their people.

Taking risks is a human trait. Gambling responsibly is a risk.

Good Luck!!

The best way show lawmakers that you support a state lottery, is to play other state lotteries. If revenue is leaving the state and funding projects in other states, politicians will come to realise that, letting the perfect be the enemy of the good, is not good economics.

If you are unable to travel to other states, you can subscribe to the Massachusetts lottery by phone, from the comfort of your home. The good people of Massachusetts will appreciate the revenue, which is distributed to local governments.

I Agree! myturn......"The best way show lawmakers that you support a state lottery, is to play other state lotteries. If revenue is leaving the state and funding projects in other states, politicians will come to realise that, letting the perfect be the enemy of the good, is not good economics."
