PORTLAND, Ore. — Oregonians voted to approve Measure 96 Tuesday, giving 1.5 percent of state lottery net proceeds toward veterans' service.

This would include assistance with employment, education, housing, physical/mental health care, addiction treatment, reintegration, access to government benefits, and other services for veterans, spouses and dependents.

Already dedicated net lottery proceeds are as follows: 18% to finance education stability fund, 15% to finance state parks, restoration and protection of native fish and wildlife, watersheds, water quality and wildlife habitats, 15% to finance school capital matching fund.

An argument in favor of passing this measure says that over 250,000 Oregon veterans do not receive the care they need. Proponents argue these funds would connect veterans to critical services like healthcare, mental health treatment, support for PTSD and preventing homelessness.

An argument against the measure says the language in the measure does not specifically identify where the funds will be allocated. Opponents also argue that is it not clear whether the lottery funds will be added to Oregon Department of Veteran Affairs' budget or will replace it altogether.

*Financial impact: the measure would not affect the overall amount of funds collected. However, based on forecasting, 1.5 percent of state lottery net proceeds would be approximately $9.3 million annually that would be shifted from economic development and public education.

I'm happy that whatever Oregon residents win from now on can get, the Veterans at that state also win.

Congratulations to Oregon voters and veterans. $9.3 million is more than they had on Monday.

I am a Veteran who served during a time of war. I don't recieve any VA benefits.
I'm glad to see that there are some people out there that still respect the sacrifices
made by our armed forces. Va benefits do not come easy. it is usually a very long
drawn out government process. maybe this bill can provide a supliment to my brothers
and sisters that aren't recieving needed compensation for the price
they paid during thier tour of duty. Good Job Oregon!

I volunteer to win a jackpot here in Oregon to get things started! I would also want to help veterans. My brother was in the Marines, and father the Army.

Thankful for all those that have served in the Armed Forces!

I Agree! I am proud to call America Home because of our attitudes towards Veterans today. Americans love our Veterans, First Responders, and the thin blue line "Police".
