Lottery store locator app works on iPhone, Android and Windows

Includes video report

How many lottery tickets go unpurchased every day because people with an urge to play the lottery right now aren't sure where they can buy tickets?

That's a question a new mobile app hopes to eliminate, by giving everyone a quick and easy — and free — way to find the nearest lottery retailers.

The app is called Lottery Places, and it will be featured on the Discovery Channel Friday morning, Aug. 7, on the 7:00 AM program NewsWatch TV.

What makes Lottery Places important and unique is that for the first time one app can locate lottery retailers in any state across the United States, parts of Canada, and the Caribbean.  Before Lottery Places, the only way to find lottery retailers in different jurisdictions would be to visit the web site of each lottery.

But sometimes even that would not be enough.

The typical lottery retailer finder on a lottery website lists retailers within a zip code.  So the lottery store locations you're shown may not include the store right down the street, which happens to be in a different zip code.

Lottery Places changes all of that, not finding lottery retailers by country, state, province, or zip code, but instead simply finding the lottery retailers nearest to you, no matter where you are.

The NewsWatch TV segment to be broadcast on Discovery Channel Friday morning shows the Lottery Places app in action, finding nearby lottery retailers, as well as searching other locations by entering a search address.

Lottery Places was launched a month ago on all three major mobile platforms — iPhone (iOS), Android, and Windows.  On the Windows platform, Lottery Places is a Windows Universal app, meaning the app runs on Windows Phones and Windows desktops, laptops, and tablets running Windows 8.1 or Windows 10.

The app is completely free to download and use.  There is no paid version of the app or in-app purchases, so all features are available to everyone for free.

NewsWatch TV is broadcast on Discovery Channel Friday mornings from 7:00 AM to 7:30 AM, in all US time zones.  On the DISH network, the program only airs in the Eastern time zone.

On the Friday, Aug. 7, program NewWatch TV will also feature top technology news, the latest mobile apps, and interviews with the cast of "Southpaw" and "Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation."

More information about the Lottery Places app, as well as download links for all the app stores, can be found at lotteryplaces.com.

News story updated with the Lottery Places video segment that aired on Discovery Channel this morning.

i find it ludicrous that someone who wants to play the lottery cannot find a place to do it. you would have to be helen keller to not find one and even she wouldn't have a problem. don't people buy food. every grocery store has a lottery terminal in it and every gas station and convenience store also. everyone is glued to those dumb-ass smart phones so i guess they are unaware about everything except someone tweeting them about what they had for lunch and tweeting back that they almost ran over a squirrel on their way to upgrade to their next latest and greatest hand held device.

Well, now you CAN find lottery retailers.  And you don't need to use a smartphone if you don't want to.  Any Widnows 8.1 or Windows 10 PC can use the app.  You can find it on the Windows Store.

is it free? otherwise, you can just drive around and peer at storefronts and see the lottery signs which are well displayed. do we needs apps for everything we do now. everyone got along fine before without them. unless you are in a strange area totally useless app. and you have to upgrade to windows 10 to get it from what i read. anyone who needs this for their own area needs more help than just an app. still maintaining it's too ridiculous to even consider. maybe if could purchase the tickets with your hand held device or tablet or computer you'd have a story here. i can't believe they had a tv show to announce it. seems like someone could of thought of this before now, but didn't since it still seems not a must have app.

I'd recommend reading the news story above.  It describes how the app is free, and lots of other stuff.

Faber98, I think the point you're missing is that this app was created by Todd and his LP crew. So it is news worthy on LP. Besides, it's not everyday you get your app featured in a show on a TV network like Discovery. So allow them to bask in the glory of their success, even if the app is free.

Todd, take a bow please. Congrats

For those of us that work full time jobs in a big city and are busy people, stopping to peer at storefronts might cause wreck.  If I happen to be in a different part of the city for a meeting or something, I can use the app. Most of us don't have the time to walk around either and look for retailers. Sometimes a retailer may be in a large building around the corner and you would not know that from looking at the outside of the building. So that is how things work in the big city.

Yes, we need apps. It's part of what normal people call progress. I AM REALLY SHOCKED THAT YOU JUST DRIVE AROUND AND PEER AT STOREFRONTS.  Who needs cars? We used to get around just fine without cars and a bunch of other things. Progress comes in all shapes and sizes. Then again, WHO NEEDS SCHOOL, RIGHT?.

It's OK, some people are simply resistant to change.  The same thing happened when the Internet started becoming big.  Luddites (people who are opposed to technological change) called the Internet evil and bad.  They kept thinking that right up until the point when they started to use it themselves.  Then it became a good thing.  So these folks now see mobile phones as the next evil thing.  If they got over their phobias and started to use one, their perception would change.

There is definitely a use for this. In strange and big cities especially.

I remember wanting to buy a ticket near Central Park and I had to search forever, there just was no 7-11 around, and finally found this tiny tiny store where only one customer could stand in there.
