Powerball jackpot winner pleads out in stalking case

A black sheep member of a prominent Marinette County, Wisconsin, family has opted for a plea deal on several felonies he piled up in the wake of winning a $31.4 million Powerball jackpot.

Douglas P. Miron, 50, pleaded no contest to amended counts late last month, just as he was scheduled to begin a complicated trial Nov. 1 on a raft of charges from burglary and stalking to reckless endangerment and perjury.

Because of Miron's family connections — his father is former District Attorney Dan Miron and his brother is Circuit Judge David Miron — Douglas Miron's case was being handled by a state prosecutor from the Department of Justice and a judge from Door County, often through video hearings connecting Miron, his lawyer in Menasha, the judge and prosecutor from four different locations.

It grew out of a secret John Doe investigation before a judge in Brown County.

The charges filed against Miron in the summer of 2015 grew out of what the criminal complaint suggests was his unrequited obsession with a teenage girl he hired to clean the house he bought after his 2009 lottery win.

After opting for a lump-sum payout of $11.2 million after taxes, Miron bought a new truck, a Jaguar and a house on acreage with a landing strip. He helped out some people in tough financial jams, bought others snowmobiles, and opened a restaurant where he hired friends.

But he also became very interested in a teenager who worked at one of his properties, and then rented a house to her and her mother. When the girl began rejecting his interests in a relationship, according to the criminal complaint, Miron began a series of threatening and criminal actions stretching from 2011 to 2014.

The counts included stalking, burglary and perjury, as well as six counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety and one misdemeanor — intentionally pointing a gun at someone. Miron had pleaded not guilty to all counts and immediately challenged whether he could get a fair trial in Marinette County.

On Oct. 21, Miron entered no contest pleas to amended charges of stalking, one count of second-degree reckless endangerment and misdemeanor counts of resisting or obstructing an officer, and intentionally pointing a firearm at someone.  The most serious charge, endangerment, carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

Miron is now set for sentencing in January before Door County Circuit Judge Todd Ehlers. Miron has been free on a $100,000 signature bond.

That left picture gave me the creeps.  The way off-base, he reminds me of that Zimmerman from Florida, well connected with his retired Daddy-o Judge and never gets in trouble.
