Texas Lottery to launch new game after AG gives OK

AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Lottery Commission is moving forward with next year's launch of an unusual new game after getting a favorable ruling on its legality from Attorney General Greg Abbott.

The game, "Texas Triple Chance," combines elements of traditional lottery games and scratch-off games.

Players pay $2 for three sets of seven numbers chosen from the range of 1-55. Each day, a set of 10 is drawn by the game. If a player's set matches the drawn set, he or she wins $100,000 (if six numbers match, the player wins $500; five numbers nets $25, four numbers $5 and three numbers $2).

The odds of winning are roughly the same as other games, according to the lottery.

Because it is a traditional game with preset prizes and no provision for carrying over jackpots that are not won, state Sen. Bob Deuell in February asked Abbott if it was legal.

Abbott determined there is nothing in the Texas Constitution or State Lottery Act that would prohibit that type of game, likely making it legal because of the broad authority lawmakers have given the lottery commission to develop games.

"A court is unlikely to conclude that the Commission's Texas Triple Chance game is unconstitutional merely because it awards a preset prize amount regardless of the number of tickets purchased or because it does not carry forward any unpaid prize money to be awarded to an eventual winner," Abbott wrote in a formal opinion.

Lottery spokeswoman Kelly Cripe said the commission was pleased by the decision.

The commission "will move forward with the introduction of Texas Triple Chance in the fall of 2015," Cripe said.

There is a commission to study the lottery that will present it's results in December. So, TLC is moving forward until they are disbanded, if that actually happens.

"fall of 2015"

Wonder why so far off? I looked on the Texas lottery website and it says this game's rules were approved/adopted in March 2014.

Maybe it has something to do with the new Monopoly game.
